Alliance of Contradictions
After NATO's Anniversary Summit
British Prime Minister Brown, US President Obama and French President Sarkozy at the NATO summit in Strasbourg and Kehl, 4 April 2009
This paper reviews NATO's 60th anniversary summit in Strasbourg and Kehl. The author explains that while the summit may have been overshadowed by controversy over the nomination of the new secretary-general, the key issues were the realignment of strategy on Afghanistan, the renewal of the trans-Atlantic partnership, and the task of elaborating a new strategic concept. The paper concludes that in order to preserve the trans-Atlantic security partnership, NATO will have to reduce the level of its ambitions.
