The Battalion State: Securitization and Nation-Building in Eritrea
This paper describes how the main challenge facing Eritrea has been to turn a hardened ideology of self-reliance and national unity derived from the independence struggle into economic development and participatory governance. The author explains that the Eritrean leadership has made excessive use of such collective identity in a continued militarization of society and further involvement in conflicts in the African Horn region, prioritizing security before poverty reduction and democracy.
