Conclusion
The tremendous social and political changes that followed the end of the Cold War have opened up prospects for a new, united Europe and put an end to the US-Russian nuclear standoff. However, alongside the successes of a number of Eastern and Central European states, many countries in the region have since suffered from the dismantling of democratic reforms and an expansion of authoritarian tendencies.
