A Heavy Hand: The Use of Force by India’s Police
This brief examines the laws governing police use of force in India, the situations in which force is employed, the cultural factors that affect policing, lethal violence, and the prospects for effective reform. The misuse of force casts a dark shadow over India’s police establishment. Both cooperation with citizens and accountability are missing in India. The police have a reputation for brutality and extortion, and citizen distrust of them is widespread.
