Political Economy in Security Studies After the Cold War

This paper explores the relationship between two subfields of international relations theory, namely international political economy and security studies. The author discusses how traditional security concerns are affected by issues normally associated with political economy. He reviews three sets of concerns: issues where the link between political economy and security studies is obvious and long recognized; modern issues which were developed theoretically after World War II; and new issues which reflect the post-Cold War manifestation of traditional concerns. The paper concludes by applying the theoretical parts of the paper to specific themes in the emerging international system.
