How to Save the Sahel
This article addresses the growing turmoil in the Sahel in 2012, arguing that this could threaten the stability of several North African states and Europe as well. Failure of action on bolstering regional unity in the face of multiple threats will only encourage the likes of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and Ansar Dine or “the supporters of faith” to gain sway over broader areas of the Sahel. The authors also state that the US, France and UK would be well advised to refrain from trying to play the grand game in the region.
