Iraq's Secular Opposition: The Rise and Decline of Al-Iraqiya
A key player in the summer 2012 political crisis unfolding in Baghdad is the Al-Iraqiya Alliance, a cross-confessional, predominantly Sunni, mostly secular coalition of parties. However, its flailing efforts to unseat Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki highlight Iraqiya’s waning power as a force that could be an effective political counterweight. If Iraqiya is to play a role in solving the country’s political crisis, it first will have to overcome the crisis within that has steadily been eroding its credibility. Iraqiya’s ability to improve its own performance will in turn have a significant effect on Iraq’s ability to resolve its political crisis.
