The G8 Global Partnership: Background and Current Status
This paper provides background information on the establishment of the G8 Global Partnership against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction (GP) in 2002. The author conducts a review of the subsequent program activities in the areas of submarine dismantlement, chemical weapons destruction, and fissile materials elimination, and provides a general overview of the successes and shortcomings of the GP in its first three years. The paper states that if the program is to make a real difference in securing weapons of mass destruction and component materials, stronger leadership and more coordination will be needed in the future.
