Determinants of Institutional Long-Term Care in Germany
The paper examines the institutional long-term care in Germany. With the introduction of the Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) in 1995, a wide range of benefits for long-term care at home and (since 1996) in institutions is available. Since 1999, statistics on the beneficiaries have been published every two years. The statistics provide information about the characteristics of nearly all institutionalized people in need for care. In this paper, the information from the long-term care statistics is used to provide an overview of the characteristics of people living in nursing homes compared to beneficiaries of home care.
