The Forum Betawi Rempug (FBR) of Jakarta
An Ethnic-Cultural Solidarity Movement in a Globalising Indonesia
This paper offers an account of the Forum Betawi Rempug, which is a Jakarta-based ethnic-cultural solidarity movement that campaigns for the political and economic rights of Betawi people of West Java. The FBR has been applying pressure upon many of the political parties of the country to recognize the plight of the Betawi people and to accept their demands for better representation at the local level, more access to jobs, housing and education, and it has called upon the people of Betawi to gather together under the banner of a mass movement that represents their interests at both a local and national level.
