Livelihoods, Basic Services and Social Protection in South Sudan
This paper examines the consequences of the war in Sudan on people’s lives, livelihoods and access to basic services, and outlines South Sudan’s challenges in overcoming these. Factors impinging on livelihood recovery in the world’s newest country range from rapid urbanization, a major post-war influx of foreigners and the limited capacity of the Government of South Sudan, to issues of land dispute resolution and oil supply. The fact that livelihood recovery initiatives and social protection programs are underway but have largely not taken off makes apparent the need for further investigation into the nature of return and reintegration.
