China’s Rising Influence in Asia: Implications for US Policy

This paper analyzes the balance of power in East Asia and China's growing weight in the region. According to the authors, China's influence stems from its size and market dynamism, reinforced by military restraint and skillful diplomacy. They argue that the US needs to refocus and enhance its engagement with Asia if it is to retain influence in the region. They advise an active and high-level participation in regional diplomacy, enhanced cooperation on nontraditional security issues, welcoming a constructive Chinese regional role, and the development of a comprehensive, government-wide strategy to pursue the full range of US objectives in Asia.
