Iran’s Diplomacy Towards Afghanistan: A Stabilising Factor?

Iran is often seen only as a ‘rogue state’ by the US and its Western allies. This paper argues that such a view is rather simplistic and that Iran’s first goal is to protect itself as a regime and a nation, with the Afghanistan-Iran relationship used as an example. What can be seen in the recent past as well as in the post-9/11 period is that the Iranian thinking towards Afghanistan is dictated by a sense of realism. In that perspective, Iran can be a force for stability there immediately after 2014, if old wounds and Washington’s tensions with Tehran don’t come in the way.
