The Arab Spring One Year Later
Voices from North Africa, Middle East and Europe
This paper presents several analyses written in the context a conference held on 29-30 March 2012 in Brussels on the topic of the Arab Spring. These papers were written by conference participants, many of whom being actors in the transformations in North Africa. The views given reflect the difficulties of overcoming structural constraints such as the role of the military, policy and security sector at large, as well as conflicts over secular vs. religious order. The contributions should convey the message that engagement matters: Europe is linked to the Arab world via the Mediterranean Sea and not separated by it.
