Fishing for Gas and More in Cypriot Waters
The escalation of tensions over Cypriot gas appears to be impeding progress on developing the country’s significant offshore resources. This brief argues that none of the interested parties – the two Cypriot communities, Turkey and the EU – benefit from the status quo and that, on the contrary, all forgo significant benefits that would come from a resolution of the conflict, development of the new gas resources, and improved Turkish-EU relations. Political leaders responsible for the affairs of Cyprus should engineer together a paradigm shift back into the safe waters of conflict resolution, reconciliation and international law.
