Guinea Bissau, Africa's 1st Narco-State
In this video interview, Davin O'Regan elaborates on a report he co-authored, "Advancing Stability and Reconciliation in Guinea-Bissau: Lessons from Africa's First Narco-State." As a result of his research, one of O'Regan's major conclusions is that "A battalion of [traditional] peacekeepers is not the way you deal with [the] shadowy criminal networks" that have penetrated multiple layers of Guinea-Bissau's government and society. Instead, the country needs an intervention force that includes law-enforcement, judicial, and legal regulatory expertise that can teach local authorities to deal with organized crime networks most effectively.
