Idealism and Realism in Humanitarian Action
Two Talks Given at the ACFID Humanitarian Forum
This paper examines the relationship between ideals and reality in humanitarian action. It discusses different types of idealism in values, activities, practice, actors, accountability and rights. It then confronts those with the given realistic relationships, organizations and people. The author suggests that the best way to operate realistically but with ideals is by developing a "sense of reality" which is combined with practical virtues like reasonable expectation compassion and fine judgment.
