India: A Destination Nightmare for Tourists?
Implications of Sexual Violence
This paper looks at the consequences of the increased reports of sexual assault and rape in India in 2013. It first looks at the question whether the increase in rape cases is an indication of an actually increasing level of sexual violence, or a result of more women coming forward due to the increased awareness of their rights and the machineries put in place making the reporting process easier. It then looks at India's tourist demographics and examines the drop in visits to India, which, the author concludes, indicate that sexual harassment impacts the entire tourist market rather than solely female tourists.
