Bangladesh is in a state of flux -- its economy is healthy and growing, but its democratic politics are increasingly polarized and violent. This paper wonders whether these diverging trends can indeed be reconciled in the near-term. It also worries about the national elections scheduled for 2014. Although there are no signs of compromise between the ruling Awami League (AL) and the opposition Bangladesh National Party (BNP), the paper believes that the possibility of the AL's tenure ending with a 'soft' rather than 'hard' landing remains realistic.
