Religion, Ethnicity and Identity Politics in the Persian Gulf
This paper explores how the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the three Gulf Wars have contributed to raising the issue of identity politics in the Persian Gulf. It also examines the impact of the Third Gulf War and the ensuing Iranian nuclear crisis on identity politics in the region. The paper concludes that the rise of such politics facilitates fragmentation of existing nation states in the region and is leading to instability as competing ethnic and religious groupings demand a greater voice, rights and representation.
