Xi and Abe on the Brink: Can the US Help Avert Armed Conflict?
This commentary examines the role of the US in managing tensions between China and Japan. The author argues that nationalism, Japanese historical revisionism and Chinese foreign policy are creating a potentially dangerous situation. In this context, the US could reduce tensions by backing Japan's administrative control of the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands until peaceful settlement is achieved, and rein in Prime Minister Abe's revisionist interpretations of history.
