China’s Response to the US in Contemporary Asia
This article offers insight into China's perspective of US Asia-Pacific foreign policy. It looks at the three major trends in this perspective as revealed by a study of Chinese commentary and media coverage on US activity in Asia. It also looks at the perception of US involvement in the South China Sea disputes and the US–Japan alliance in the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands dispute. It argues that understanding the nuances of China’s perspective is important as it makes the US examine the accuracy of Western perceptions of China’s ‘stance’ and gives greater insight into the narratives and strategic culture of the Chinese Communist Party.
