Kurds hold up Syria's pre-Baath and Kurdish flags

In early 2013, Syria's majority-Kurd areas have remained relatively insulated from the civil war. This report argues that Syria's Kurdish population is at a critical juncture. The population has long faced difficulties in its relationship with Syria's government and other groups in the country's political landscape. The civil war has also raised nationalist tensions among the Kurdish population, which has drawn the attention of the wider region. This report argues that Syria's Kurds should avoid entanglement in regional concerns and focus on renegotiating their role in a future Syrian order in order to restore their basic human rights.
