UNASUR and Security in South America

UNASUR is a regional organization formed by 12 South American states. Over the years it has achieved notable successes – limiting regional defense expenditures, handling constitutional crises in Ecuador and Paraguay, settling disputes between Venezuela and Colombia, etc. Despite these successes, however, the organization continues to face various security challenges. This backgrounder details these challenges and UNASUR's possible responses to them.
