Senkaku (Diaoyu/Diaoyutai) Islands Dispute
US Treaty Obligations
This report describes the tensions and rival claims of China, Japan, and Taiwan to a set of small islands in the East China Sea and the legal role of the US dating from the 1960 US – Japan Security Treaty. Members of Congress periodically have been involved or expressed interest in the Senkaku (Diaoyu) dispute over the decades, most prominently when the issue of the US -Japan Security Treaty’s application arose during the Senate’s deliberations over the Okinawa Reversion Treaty. More recently, Congressional committees have explored the topic in hearings about maritime disputes in East Asia.
