Challenges of Protecting US Nuclear Weapon Materials
This report addresses the inherent security challenges associated with the US's maintenance of its large nuclear weapons infrastructure. It discusses a security breach at a US nuclear production facility in July 2012 to highlight some of the dangers and consequences. The large quantities of separated nuclear material located in sites spread across the US and activities related to stockpile stewardship presents challenges for securing nuclear material. It notes that while spreading these sites out may have made strategic sense during the Cold War, this is no longer appropriate for 20th century security concerns that include non-state actors.
