Demographic Challenges and Opportunities Ahead in the Middle East and North Africa
"Arab Spring" or "Islamic Winter"?
This brief looks at demographic shifts in Arab countries and examines its causes and effects. It draws an analogy between demographic shifts in Europe over the past two centuries and those occurring now in this region, and points out that the latter are taking place in a fraction of the time. It comes to the conclusion that, as an effect of increased secularization, demographic transition can be equated with democratic transition.
