China and Southeast Asia: A Shifting Zone of Interaction

This chapter reviews the enlargement of China’s zone of interaction with Southeast Asia since the end of the Cold War. Southeast Asia remains a shifting zone of interaction due to the differing claims of sovereignty claims in the South China Sea between China and other bordering states. Further pressure ensues because of China's moves to expand the boundaries beyond the region to a wider East Asian setting.
