Iran and the Role of Social Networks
This article discusses the mechanics of social networks and the development of the Iranian protest network triggered by the disputed 2009 presidential election results. While social media tools are redefining our everyday communications and networking habits, they have also greatly impacted governments in the relations with their citizens, especially in the area of accountability and on the issue of human rights. The consequences are sometimes unexpected and at this stage often staggering. The Iranian government was not spared by this new social phenomenon, but it has managed to control its unexpected aspect, so far, the author argues.
