US Army soldiers in Afghanistan

In this monograph, the author examines the scope of military history from the ancient to the present day, comparing the characteristics of the various eras. He argues that, for the most part, there has been a steady escalation from primitive, indirect, low-casualty conflict to the massive total wars of the 20th century. Instead of a new era of war, we have returned to something akin to primitive warfare, with ritual and restraint now as important as what might be seen as objective standards of military success.
