Protecting the Global Commons
This report summarizes an Allied Command Transformation-led roundtable held in September 2010 which focused upon the dual requirements of promoting stability and protecting access within the global commons (GC). Debates about the global role of NATO were a key feature, with US calls for NATO to assume a leading role in GC strategy contrasted against a more cautious assessment by some European allies. However, it was clear that NATO’s response to the challenges of the GC would require a wide range of non-military tools, including political and diplomatic approaches, as well as extensive co-operation with commercial, industry and legal stakeholders.
