Armies and Democracy in the New Africa

Lessons from Nigeria and South Africa

This article reviews the need to reform African civil-military relations and the crucial role the United States must play in this. It contends that US planners and policy-makers must have a clear, historically-grounded understanding of the dominant patterns of African civil-military relations. The authors use the cases of Nigeria and South Africa to emphasize the need for strategic support to establish democracies in the region.
