Identity and Beyond: Rethinking Africanity

This paper discusses identity politics in Africa in historic and contemporary contexts. The authors explore identity constructs, their emergence through cultural production in Africa, and how they relate to gender, sexuality and rights. They discuss African identity as an ongoing quest and explore the role of gender and power, arguing that it should not be seen as all encompassing since it was imposed by colonial culture. The authors discuss the notion of 'Africanity' as expressed in African and western languages and reflect on how to rethink power in Africa, moving beyond discussions of an African identity.
