China's "Assassin's Mace" Concept
This chapter develops a baseline for understanding 'shashoujian' or the 'assassin's mace' concept in the context of the People's Republic of China's military affairs and aspirations for transformation of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in the early 21st century. It chronicles shashoujian's historical origins, examines how shashoujian has emerged as a topic of significance within the Chinese national defense establishment, and considers how shashoujian might satisfy Chinese national defense requirements.
