Orbital Debris Produced by Kinetic-Energy Anti-Satellite Weapons
This chapter addresses the problem of space debris arising from the destruction of satellites in orbit by the testing or use of kinetic-energy anti-satellite (ASAT) weapons. The paper provides an introduction to the current debris population in outer space and presents calculations of the amount of debris produced by the destruction of a satellite. The author argues that controlling the production of debris is crucial for the sustainable use of outer space.
