Material Determinism and Beyond: Spatial Categories in the Study of Violent Conflict
This paper reviews recent debates in peace and conflict studies over the theoretical and empirical integration of spatial categories. The authors discuss three relative strands of research, arguing that most studies in these three fields are limited to analyzing external material influences on violent conflict. However, the authors contend that the analysis of the relationship between space and conflict should encompass both the materiality of space and its social meaning.
