Navigating US-China Relations: Complicated by China’s “Unrelenting Strategy”
This commentary discusses the Chinese approach toward the relationship with the United States. The Chinese government, especially the People’s Liberation Army, is appearing more aggressive, self-confident, and assertive in dealing with the US and its allies. The author denotes that an explanation to this approach could lie in an ancient Chinese strategy called the “unrelenting strategy”. This strategy first calls for China to confuse its opponent’s judgments, second to create and induce internal political conflicts within its opponent, and third to deepen the opponent’s existing internal conflicts before launching an offensive attack. The use of this strategy suggests that Beijing has taken the US-China relationship onto an adversarial path, seeking to reduce Washington’s influence in Asia.
