Central Asia's Localised Poverty and Social Unrest
This report examines social and economic conditions in selected localities of Central Asia. It concentrates on Batken, Kyrgystan; Badakhshan and Gharm, Tajikistan and the Ferghana Valley in Uzbekistan. These regions face the common problems of poverty, corruption, repressive policies and government failure to address local needs. The report points to the danger that these problems could lead to outbreaks of localized unrest that would have the potential to spread into a wider regional conflict.
