A New Approach to Understanding Afghanistan's Transition
Comparisons with International Postconflict Experience
A US soldier shows an Afghanistan National Police officer how to correctly hold a 9 mm M9 Pistol during weapons training in Sar Hawza, Afghanistan.
In order to aid the policy development process in Afghanistan, this report looks at other low-income countries that have attempted to transition from a state of violent conflict into one of relative 'normalcy', or even peace. It then compares these examples to major trends in Afghanistan since the overthrow of the Taliban in 2001, and to the conditions that exist in the country as of mid-2013. By comparing this data, policy makers can draw their own conclusions on how to shape realistic, country-specific plans for the future of Afghanistan, or so the authors hope.
