China’s Central Asia Problem
This report examines how China currently views its political and strategic interests in Central Asia. It confirms that Beijing sees the Xinjiang Autonomous Region and Central Asia as interrelated parts of a broader economic and security-centered whole. It also outlines the security challenges that Central Asian states pose for China, which is seen as a regional 'economic imperialist'. While Beijing has taken some steps to address these problems, the report concludes that it has yet to formulate a clear plan that will promote stability across the region.
